The cemetery is the historic Catholic cemetery of Hallstatt. It is located on the hillside beside the church and overlooks Hallstatter See. The cemetery is small because Hallstatt is surrounded by mountains, leaving very limited land for burials. For centuries, this lack of space led to the local tradition of exhuming bones after several years and placing them in the nearby Hallstatt Charnel House. There are no family graves here. A grave can be re-occupied after ten years.
