The church is believed to have been completed by 1180 and has undergone many reconstruction since. It was built as the parish church of Bergen but was taken over by the merchants of the Hanseatic League for 400 years (1360-1761). It was then known as "the German church" until the 19th century and sermons were still held in German until the First World War.
