The first towns in Norway began to appear around the year 1000. Norwegian towns were mainly situated at the coast and it was the sea that connected the towns. Townhouses were made of wood.
In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Norwegian town population were mixed. The upper class were the officials and people of foreign origins. The middle class consisted of traders and craftmen while the lower class consisted of servants, seamen, soldiers and fishermen.
