Kumbum Monastery : The Main Assembly Hall

The Main Assembly Hall is the largest bilding here. It has 168 columns. The monks will gather to chant the sutras here. Murals are a distinct art here. They are mainly drawn from Buddhist sutras. The columns are covered with barbola and barbola are also hang between the columns.
















Barbola is the art of cutting silk or satin into shapes of buddha, flowers or animals and filling them wool and cotton to make them three dimensional.

Kumbum Monastery 2

Kumbum Monastery was founded in 1583 by the third Dalai Lama. It was built on the site where Tsongkhapa (the founder of the Gelug School of Tibetan Buddhism, the Uellow Hat Sect) was born. Kumbum Monastery is well-known for its “Three Arts,” which are butter sculpture, murals, and barbola.

Great Mosque of Xining

The mosque was built in 1380 and has undergone many renovations. Like most mosques in China, it combines both the Chinese and Islamic architectural styles. It also serves as a centre of higher learning for Islamic studies.
