The Great Sphinx of Giza

Archaeologists dated the Sphinx to the Old Kingdom (c2500 BC) crediting Khafre as its builder. It stands at 20 m high and 73 m long. The lion's body symbolizes royal power and the head a pharaoh believed to be Khafre. The name sphinx was only given during the classical antiquity about 2000 years later.

We left Giza at 1.05 pm after spending 3.5 hours here

The First Intermediate Period saw the decline of the Old Kingdom and the Giza Necropolis was abandoned.  Drifting sand eventually buried the Sphinx up to its shoulders. The Sphinx was only freed from the sand in 1930s
