Lacock Abbey is more than 800 years old. It was founded in 1232 by Ela, the Countess of Salisbury, one of the most powerful women in the Middle Ages. Lacock Abbey has undergone many changes of ownership before it was inherited by William Henry Fox Talbot in 1800.
