The initial collection was donated to the University by Elias Ashmole. This museum has grown to be one of the best in Britain outside London. It was opened in 1683 and widely recognised as the first modern museum.
We knew we couldn't see the whole of the museum so we concentrated on the Egyptian and Western Art sections only
