This piazza has been around since the 9th century and extended to its current size in the 11th century and paved in the 12th century. It is the social, religious and cultural centre of Venice.

We did not visit the Basilica di San Marco and the Palazzo Ducale as we have visited them on our first trip to Venice.
This new Campanile replaced the old one that has collapsed in 1902
