Alhambra in Arabic means "red castle". It is located on a hill to the west of the city of Granada.
It started as a fortress in the 9th century and was turned into a palace by the Nasrid Dynasty in the 13th century. The Alhambra complex includes the Royal Palaces, the Alcazaba, the Palace of Carlos V and Generalife. It is now a World Heritage Site.
