Manuel I constructed this monastery in 1501 to commemorate the successful return of Vasco da Gama from India. The monastery was rebuilt over the next 100 years using the money derived from imported goods from Africa and the Far East (pepper money). It was customary for sailors to spend their last night in Portugal here before their long journeys.
This monastery was declared a World Heritage Site in 1983 together with the Tower of Belem.
