The Treasury is known in Arabic as Al-Khazneh, meaning “The Treasury.” Its name comes from an old legend that an Egyptian pharaoh had hidden his treasure here. It was most likely built in the early 1st century AD, probably during the reign of the Nabataean king Aretas IV (9 BC–AD 40). It is the first monument you will see as you emerge from the Siq.

The purpose of the Treasury remains a mystery; except that it was not a treasury. It could have been a royal tomb, a temple or a mausoleum.
