Walking to the St Gellert Statue

We decided to go back to Gellert Hill to see the statue of St Gellert. We were told that it is very near  the Cave Church and that we should walk there. So we walked. And walked. And walked  until we finally reached the foot of the hill.

The Royal Palace

The building of the Royal Palace was King Bela IV in the 13th century. The Holy Roman Emperor Sigismund built a Gothic palace here. In the 18th century, the Habsbergs also built their palace here. It is now a museum.

Depicts King Matyas on a hunting expedition where he met Ilonka, a  peasant

Fishermen Bastion

This Romanesque monument to the Guild of the Fishermen was built in 1895 next to Matyas Church. It never had the role of a defensive building despite its name. It serves instead as a viewing terrace.

Matyas Church

This church was built in the 13th century in the Romanesque style before being changed into Gothic. The Turks converted the church into a mosque in 1541.

Castle District

The Castle District is the historical castle and palace complex of the Hungarian kings in Budapest, first completed in 1265.

We took the funicular up to the Castle District.






Buda Castle Tunnel

The Scottish engineer Adam Clark settled in Hungary after completing the Chain Bridge. One of his later projects was building this tunnel that runs through Castle Hill.
