Leaning Tower of Pisa

Once upon a time, there was a builder who made a mistake in his calculation and built a tower that began to lean. Never would he dream that one day people from around the world would come to Pisa to see the result of his mistake.

Our timed entry to the tower was at 4.00 pm

The construction of the tower dates back to 1173. The tower began to lean during consrtuction in the 12th century because of the soft ground and insufficient piling work. Hence, the Tower of Pisa has been known as the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

The building is hollow

There are 294 steps to the top

The bells have not been rung since the 19th century because the vibration may cause the tower to lean even more

The leaning of the tower gradually increased over the 800 years to 5° and was on the verge of collapsing. A major project in 1990 led by John Burland of the Imperial College London managed to reduced the tilting and the tower should be stable for another 200 years. As such, there is enough time for you to  visit before it topples!
