The Uffizi is the greatest art gallery in Italy (and most probably in the world). The building was built as offices (uffizi) before it was turned into an art gallery in 1582 to house the Medici's collection over the centuries. The collection was given to the city of Florence by Anna Maria Luisa, the last of the Medici on the condition that they shall not leave Florence "so that the collection shall remain in Florence forever"
