St David's

St Davids is the smallest city in the UK by population, with 1,751 residents recorded in the wider community in the 2021 census. For centuries, St Davids had been regarded as a city because it was the seat of the Bishop of St Davids and home to the magnificent medieval St Davids Cathedral. However, having a cathedral does not automatically qualify a place as a city. St Davids lost its city status in 1888 following changes in local government legislation, but its historic city status was restored by Queen Elizabeth II in 1994.
