This is the first of the four rooms painted by Raphael. The four walls of the room represent the themes of Theology, Philosophy, Jurisprudence and Literature.
Disputation of the Holy Sacrament
Theology
The School of Athens
Philosophy
This is Raphael's most famous work. The fresco shows the philosophers are walking towards the Holy Sacrament which is on the opposite side of the wall. This represents the movement from the classical philosophy to Christianity. In the centre of the fresco, Plato points upwards with a finger and holds his book Timeus in his hand. Next to him is Aristotle with Ethics pointing his finger downwards. Socrates, Pythagoras, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael himself are among those featured in the fresco.
