Borobudur

This is the reason why we came to the island of Java. It is the nearest UNESCO World  Heritage Site to Malaysia.

This structure dates back to 750-850 CE, some 300 years before Angkor Wat.

Borobudur is constructed as a ten-terrace building. The first six terraces are square, three circular upper terraces and the highest terrace is where the Buddha statues are located. All the Buddha statues face west. Each terrace symbolizes a stage of human life.

The stupas at the highest terrace

We have to wear a sarong to enter the Borobudur compound

Inside each stupa is a statue of Buddha
