Abydos was regarded as the holiest Egyptian town during the Pharoanic times. All Egyptians tried to make the pilgrimage here during their lifetime or to be buried here. That was the reason why many tombs were painted with scenes of the deceased making the trip to Abydos by boats. All that remains today is the Temple of Seti I, one of the most well preserved temples in Egypt. It was built during Seti I's reign between 1294 to 1279 BC
Abydos maintained its importance for so many centuries because of Osiris, the God of the Dead. Legend has it that Osiris was buried here after he was murdered by his brother Seth.
