This museum has nearly 17,000 paintings, representing all important styles of Indian miniatures. The main styles are Deccani (south), Mughal (spanning central and north), Rajasthani (west) and Pahari (hills of the north).
Miniature paintings in India flourished under the Mughal rule of emperors Jahangir and Shahjahan.
The paintings are known as miniatures beacuse they are usually small paintings used as a book illustrations or to be kept in albums. Classifying these paintings as miniature is misleading. They are on average the size of A4 paper.
