Tate Modern 2

It is often said that it is wrong to ask what meaning a piece of art has. One has to try to appreciate art, however difficult it may be. Some art will confuse us while others will amuse us. But I must say you never see art until you visit Tate Modern

London from the air
(before satellite photographs were available)

A calligraphy gone wrong

Marilyn Diptych
Andy Warhol's famous work of art

Pieces of silverware on a tray?

Possibly made by a carpenter

Carpentry Room

Racks for drying rags

Spatial Concept "Waiting"
(where a cut canvas became art)

I can understand this modern art because it reminded me of the "Ah Longs"
(illegal money lenders who splash red paint on your door if don't pay up)

No matter how they jumbled the pieces I can tell it is pornographic

The egg is the star of this movie

Canvases painted with different colours are now art

Empty canvases also became art
(Good news to budding artists)

Maybe they serve as backdrop for visitors

To understand the meaning of art, I shall refer to Leo Tolstoy in his treatise What is art?. According to Tolstoy, good art is intelligible and comprehensible. Bad art is unintelligible and incomprehensible. Art is good if it is judged to be good by the majority and to be considered great only if it can be understood by everyone. Therefore, the above are still art even though they are unintelligible and incomprehensible. They are simply bad art.
