This elliptical shaped amphitheatre was built by the Romans in 90 AD. It is 136 m in length and 109 m wide. It has 120 arches. This amphitheatre, the theatre, St Trophime Church and the Cloisters are part of the World Heritage Site in Arles.
This theatre was completed in 12 BC during the reign of Augustus. Unlike most Roman theatres it was not built on a hill slope but on top of one.
The construction of the cloisters began in the 12th century and most likely after the St Trophime Church was completed. The church began to decline when the papal authority moved to Avignon.
