Borough Market

We took the tube to London Bridge and walked to Borough Market. The market has existed in one form or another for around 1000 years. The year used for the market's millennium celebration is 1014.

The market specialises in high end fresh products

There are many take away stalls

All Souls, Langham Place

This church was designed by John Nash in 1824. Its unusual round shape was ridiculed when it was first built.

It has a very simple interior

Broadcasting House

Broadcasting House is the headquarters of the BBC in Portland Place. The first radio broadcast was made on 15th March 1932.

The old building and the new wing

Commonwealth Church

We began our way to  All Souls, Langham Place from the cathedral and saw this church on the way. It was closed

Stations of the Cross

The Stations of the Cross are a 14-step Catholic devotion that commemorates Jesus Christ's last day on Earth as a man. The cathedral has 14 plagues with reliefs around its nave for a mini pilgrimage.

Confession

The cathedral has become a well known place for confession. You can even make an appointment for your confession.

We saw people queuing to confess

Confession times at this cathedral are extended in the days immediately before Christmas and Easter. I wonder why.

Westminster Cathedral

This cathedral was completed in 1903 and is one of London's rare Byzantine buildings.

Mosaics adorned the upper parts of the walls and the ceiling

Chapel of St Gregory and St Augustine

There are marbles every where

Little Ben

Little Ben is a cast iron clock tower in Westminster. The design mimics the Big Ben of the Palace of Westminster which is on the other end of Victoria Street.

Little Ben's apology for summer time
My hands you may retard or may advance
My heart beats true for England as for France

Little Ben is apologetic because it tells the wrong time for half the time as it was set according to daylight saving time.

Breakfast at the hotel

Our flight home was at 8.35 pm.

We walked around Earl's Court area before going to Westminster Cathedral.

London tube strike

A tube strike has been planned for 24 hours beginning on 8th January 2017. Although we reached Euston Station at about 9.15 pm, not all the trains were running yet.

The Euston station  tube line was closed. We walked to Euston Square station to take the Hammersmith and City line to Edgware Road station. From there we changed to District Line to go back to Earl's Court.

We reached Earl's Court at about 11.00 pm and most restaurants were closed by then. So we had Burger King for dinner.
